Emblem
Chaturbhuja Nataraja, the benign emblem of the Department, is a remarkably unique concept of Indian philosophy and, thereby, art. Charged with absolute vitality and dynamism, it symbolises a supreme universal truth: the never-ending cycle—the vigorous dance of balance and beauty—of evolution (the damaru in the rear right hand), preservation (the dishevelled hair with the flowing Ganga), and dissolution (the agni in the rear left hand), all occurring more or less simultaneously. This truth is generally not realised because of illusion (maya, indicated by the gajabahu hasta), but can be realised by supplanting ignorance (Apasmara under the right foot of the God), through the grace (the front right hand being in abhaya mudra) of the Almighty (Shiva). The refreshingly epoch-making process of change in the environment, and correspondingly in the rise and fall of human societies and civilizations, has continually been taking place in our world. This spectacular phenomenon can be appreciated only by keeping ourselves exposed to our present, wonderful and magnificent world, impregnated with the natural and human relics of the glorious past. In our culture, therefore, from a very remote past, people have been—and continue to be—encouraged and motivated to travel extensively, eventually rejuvenating and enlightening themselves while gaining a vision of the personality of the real world and, behind it, the Supreme Truth.

Motto
Nothing is Impossible for the Conscious Mind
Consciousness itself is success. For our efforts to be effective in any field, the enthusiasm that drives them must remain constant within us. When we possess the right understanding and knowledge of our work, its goals, and the methods to achieve them, new energy naturally arises within us. Where such understanding exists, nothing is impossible.
